Blue Marzano is a rare and sparsely documented variety whose name suggests a kinship with the famous San Marzano tomato, combined with an anthocyanin lineage. Although its precise origin remains unknown, the variety was commercialized in the United States by Bill Yoder, a collector of heirloom and unusual varieties. The plant, with indeterminate growth and anthocyanin pigmentation, produces fruits with a very dark blue-purple skin on exposed parts, contrasting with reddish-orange areas at maturity. The fruits, containing few seeds, are elongated plum-shaped, reminiscent of the San Marzano, but with a much darker, spectacular coloration. The flavor is sweet, fruity, surprisingly more aromatic and less ‘paste-like’ than what is usually expected from a Marzano type. It’s at full ripeness that it truly reveals the full richness of its flavor. This combination makes it a unique variety for both taste and aesthetics.
